Description: Over several years, Green Star Movement completed several projects at this elementary school in Brighton Park. GSM murals can be found on the main entrance, facing the playing field and playground, and on the theater entrance.

Perspectives Charter School by Erica Hawkinson

Description: This three-panel mural at Perspectives Charter School honors prominent women in Science, Mathematics, and Technology. The mural also highlights the school's values: self-perception, productivity, and relationships.

In 2018, our team worked with Chicago youth to create another installation for Perspective Charter School’s stage backdrop. The mural brings school spirit to the stage by depicting Perspective’s wolverine mascot.

Castellanos Elementary by Amanda Martinez

Description: This mural, located in Little Village pays tribute to Rosario Castellanos (whom the school was originally named after). Rosario is an influential historical figure from Mexico. She was a famous poet and author in the early 1900’s, known for writing about feminism and cultural oppression. The installation contains a famous quote from Rosario which reads “We have to laugh. Because laughter, we already know is the first evidence of freedom.”

Description: Located on columns at the front of the school and the wall facing the playground, these murals feature imagery from international cultures, such as Japan and Mexico. 

Inter-American is one of the oldest and most comprehensive dual language schools in the Midwest. Students learn to speak, read and write fluently in both Spanish and English.

Description: This West Town Elementary School is home to one of our most recent murals which depicts flower and aztec designs. The mural embodies the latino culture that is at the core of the school.

The indoor columns of Moos Elementary contain 4 words that embody the mission of the school decorated in a Latin American inspired theme.

Skinner West Elementary by Erica Hawkinson

Description:  Over three school years, GSM worked with 4th-8th grade students at Skinner West Elementary to beautify their school with internationally-recognized skylines, three-dimensional stars, and multicultural images and sculptures that celebrate diversity.

Description: Located on the front side of the school, the mural displays Roger’s mascot, the panther, surrounded by a beautiful mandala design. Two new murals located in the main hallway welcome students as they enter the school.

Ludwig van Beethoven Elementary by Amanda Martinez

Description: In 2019, we worked with students at Beethoven Elementary to display a mural that included important school subjects. The design includes imagery relating to math, reading, science, and music. The bottom half of the mural even includes ceramic pieces created by some of the students.

Blair Early Childhood Center by Erica Hawkinson

Description: Blair Early Elementary Center serves students ages 3-6 years old with disabilities including developmental delays, autism, and severe/profound cognitive impairments. This mural beautifies their outdoor garden and play space with a colorful scene of nature. The flower petals were individually hand-sculpted by the students.

Audubon Elementary by Erica Hawkinson

Description: Our 2018 mural showcased at Audubon Elementary school combines images of architecture from ancient cultures with scenes from beyond the stratosphere in outer space. 

In 2017, paying homage to their neighborhood and city, the students of Audubon Elementary in Roscoe Village incorporated the names of main streets near their school and elements of the Chicago flag into their mural. In 2020, our second outdoor mural at Audubon was installed recently. This design illustrates important icons found in the US by including the Statue of Liberty, Route 66, Mount Rushmore, Grand Canyon and a map of the country.

Fernwood Elementary by Erica Hawkinson

Participants: 4th-8th Grade
Description: In 2017, the students at Fernwood Elementary on the far South Side chose to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Barack Obama alongside inspiring wording that decorates columns throughout the school's main hallway. Later, we worked with students to extend the mural and pay tribute to other important African American influences; Frederick Douglas, Angela Davis, Malcolm X, and The Black Panther Party. Other mural additions include the first floor hallway that features dancing women and a large tree reminiscent of the tree of life and the importance of African dance.

Asian Human Services by Amanda Martinez

Description: This summer our team worked through some sweltering heat to beautify the outdoor space of the Asian Human Services in the hopes of highlighting the wonderful support the center provides for immigrants and refugees in Chicagoland, focusing on community health, counseling, education, and job-related services.

Description: The new entrance mosaic at Boone represents the diversity and inclusion of the Boone community, the city, and Lake Michigan. Boone students choose to highlight their robust arts and sports programs. At the heart of the mural is the word 'Welcome' repeated in different languages. Students also included a paw for the beloved Boone mascot, the Bulldog. 

Oscar DePriest Elementary School by Amanda Martinez

Description: The new mural at Oscar DePriest School is our first installation at the school. The design highlights the important historical figure Oscar DePriest, the first African American elected to city council in Chicago and later to Congress, who inspired the school's name. The mural includes a portrait of DePriest as well as the phrases "Engage, Believe, Succeed." Other important elements of the mural include a scene of students celebrating their graduation by throwing their caps and a dolphin and wave scene that represents the school's mascot.

Daniel Webster Public School by Amanda Martinez

Description: Our first mural at Webster Public School highlights the school’s mascot, the Wildcat. Other images include students playing basketball, studying science, and making art. Green Star worked on a second project in 2020 that ascends the main staircase. Students growing from infancy to adulthood is represented by the silhouettes as well as the caterpillar growing into beautiful butterflies.

Description: Located on the front facade of the school, this mural depicts worldly imagery and unique design elements. Different continents can be seen throughout the mural but each section is unique due to each panel showing a variety of geometric and floral patterns and colors. One panel even includes a portion of the Chicago skyline with the Chicago flag embedded onto the buildings.
